Associate Professor

Curriculum & Projects

Mar Martín-Fontecha Corrales studied Chemistry at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) where she received her Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry in 2005 under the guidance of Prof. Diego Armesto Vilas. Her predoctoral work was focused on the synthesis and photochemical reactivity of 1,4-unsaturated compounds promoted by triplet and electron-transfer sensitizers.

Afterwards, she joined the Medicinal Chemistry Laboratory led by Prof. Maria Luz López-Rodríguez at the same university as a postdoctoral researcher to work on the design and synthesis of new 5-HT1A serotoninergic agents in collaboration with the pharmaceutical company Schwarz-Pharma. In October 2005, she was appointed to the academic staff of the Department of Organic Chemistry I as an Assistant Professor.

In 2008 she spent a year as a MEC-postdoctoral fellow at Imperial College London (London, UK) to work on the synthesis of enantioenriched secondary and tertiary alcohols via tricarbonylchromium(0) complexes of benzyl allyl ethers under the supervision of Prof. Susan E. Gibson.

In 2009 she was promoted to Doctor Assistant Professor of the Department of Organic Chemistry I at the UCM, where she is currently a member of the research and academic staff.

Her current research areas include the design, synthesis and development of new therapeutic agents for the treatment of neurodegenerative and cancer diseases, the development of chemical probes for the study of cannabinoid and serotonin receptors and the design of new inhibitors of the bacterial cell division protein FtsZ.
